Summary: | Discovered four years ago by Tru Thoughts, Brighton's exciting label and headhunter of new talent, Manu Delago is now one of the international ambassadors of the hang drum - a contemporary, steel drum-like percussion instrument. Here at the Moods Club in Zurich, the Austrian artist delivers a set fit for the occasion, starting an intro in which his band appears equipped with headlamps on a dark stage. Proceeding from this visual effect, the rhythmician takes us through tracks that hold sometimes cinematographic resonance. It is a sound at the crossroads between jazz and classical music, and the ensemble delivers beautiful string sequences in accompaniment. The arrangements reminiscent of Michael Nyman's original soundtracks or the latest albums of the Icelandic pythie Björk, with whom Manu Delago has recorded and toured. Both intimate and lyrical, this is music marked by solemn climates and folk accents, with the tracks tending towards a certain universality. During the finale, the dialogue between the violins and the crystalline hang drum marks the kind of imperceptible tempo mastery only a maestro like this could pull off. Vincent Caffiaux. |
