Summary: | "To celebrate its 20th anniversary as today's most prestigious retro-soul label, Daptone Records shows off its talented roster of soul/funk/gospel musicians for a special three-night event. It takes place at the Apollo Theater, the historic Harlem house that launched the careers of iconic soul players, including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, The Jackson 5, and Luther Vandross. So, it proves to be the perfect setting to showcase the groups the Brooklyn, New York label presents in full glory. This 47-minute long video captures the rich wealth of Daptone talent, including down-home gospel groups, the horn-driven Menahan Street Band, the grooved and soulful Sugarman 3, and two of its biggest vocalist stars, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley-both of whom have passed away since the 2014 event. The powerful Bradley, heralded as the Screaming Eagle of Soul, turns in a riveting performance of his gripping tune "Let Love Stand a Chance." He extends the tune and reaches out to the joyful audience with his moving expression. The highlight of the evening takes place when Jones performs the rollicking "Get Up and Get Out," a tune that starts out slow and then cooks as her band the Dap-Kings sets the rhythm & blues groove that gives her the freedom to shout and dance feverishly. She explains to the crowd that this was an old original that took on new meaning after she was a cancer survivor. She ends the video with another spirited performance where she dances to the spirit of James Brown and her African roots. "Super Soul Revue" offers only a sampling of the party the label created.
