Summary: | "By the time he appeared onstage at the Au Fil des Voix Festival in 2013, Antonio Zambujo was no longer a true unknown. The native of Beja (born in 1975), in the Alentejo region, had already earned a faithful public after his first tour date in Paris in 2008. Beyond fado, whether novo or retro, this Portuguese singer brings back memories of the great Lusitanian voices of the past, a silken timbre that recalls the Brazilian artist Caetano Veloso, an overt admirer of the Portuguese. Like his illustrious predecessor, his understated sensuality makes light of clichés, branching off onto other paths - a touch of cool jazz, a dash of sweet samba - in this tradition so tightly wrapped up in its artifacts. A velvet revolution, driven by repertoire created for him by others and a group of select musicians, who carry him to the very summit of distinguished lovers. Indeed, when it comes to evoking the Brazilian artists who have come before him, Antonio is unfailing. It's no coincidence that one of his sons is named Joao or that he paid a glowing tribute to Chico Buarque with his 2016 album Até Pensei Que Fosse Minha. There's no doubt that this Portuguese talent has ascended to the ranks of national heritage, long embodied by Amália Rodrigues, the icon who inspired him to forge his career. I don't consider myself a fado singer. Of course, it's part of my DNA and my repertoire, but you'll also find polyphonic chant, Portuguese folklore, a little bossa nova, some cool jazz, some Angolan music ... This is in evidence in his album Quinto, released in 2012, which makes up the bulk of this evening's repertoire. Jacques Denis". |
