Description
Summary:"Trumpeter Theo Croker has come a long way in his young career, starting with being born into a jazz royalty family-his grandfather being the renowned trumpeter Doc Cheatham. While a profound respecter of the tradition, Croker graduated from the Oberlin College Conservatory and then made a seven-year left turn by moving to Shanghai, China, to attend to his triumphing identity far from the trends that were flooding into the East and West Coasts of the U.S. By serendipity vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater got hip to him there and encouraged him to return Stateside to enter into the New Jazz circles. He's taken that with an exciting outlook, recording for Dee Dee's label and is nominated for the first time in 2020's Grammy Awards for his album *Star People Nation*. This concert took place in 2017 presented by the Moods Jazz Association in Zurich. It's a two-set affair with Croker and his band primarily performing captivating music from his recent soul-jazz release, *Escape Velocity*. While not a virtuoso, Croker captures the imagination of his originals and melds perfectly with his saxophonist Irwin Hall, as they have staccato conversations and play in a double-helix formation. While marred by some long-winded instrumental band solos, the tunes reveal the trumpeter to be a song-catcher, whether it's his soul-jazz ride ""This Could Be (For the Traveling Soul)"" or his gorgeous love song, ""Because of You."" Revelation of the shows is keyboardist Liya Grigoryan who paints calming, quiet colors into Croker's songs. She's well worth watching. **Dan Ouellette**".
