In 1962 the reserved Flanagan became Ella Fitzgerald's full-time accompanist, a stint that lasted until 1965 and he returned in 1968 to be her pianist and musical director. There was an elegance to his playing, with a swing and logic, that made for a perfect pairing for Ella's voice and scats to shine. Saying "merci beaucoup" and "thank you so much ... my French is very bad, but merci" to her adoring audience, Ella sang to the heart of tunes such as "Just One of Those Things" and in honor of her French fans, "I Love Paris." Her scatting is as vital as her singing on these tunes. She ends her show by scatting into the soul of Billy Strayhorn's Duke Ellington hit, "Take the A Train." The set starts out with Ella accompanied by Oscar, a powerhouse pianist who dances on the keys in a spirited drive. She holds her own as the star with emotive deliveries through the fun and playful "In a Mellow Tone" and the clapping and sweet scat through "It's Crazy." Along for the ride is Oscar's trio of bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen.
