The original manuscript of the Mexican Chronicle (that narrates the history of the Mexica people from their departure from Aztlán to the beginning of the Conquest of Mexico) is not signed by Alvarado Tezozómoc, but the work of a skilled scribe who worked under his direction; On the other hand, the Mexicáyotl Chronicle has come down to us through the autograph copy of Domingo Chimalpáhin. The original of the Mexican Chronicle belonged successively to Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, to the Colegio de San Pedro y San Pablo, and to Lorenzo Boturini Benaduci. At the request of Boturini himself, whose collection had been confiscated, Mariano Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia ordered a copy of the Chronicle to be taken in Mexico, which was completed in October 1755, two months after Boturini's death in Madrid. That copy of Veytia, which was lightly edited for correctness and clarity, is now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, classified as Mexican manuscript 207. All the manuscript copies of the Chronicle that were made in the 18th century and the printed editions that were made in the 19th century were based immediately or mediately on the text of Veytia's copy. The original of the Chronicle disappeared from 1755 until, after two hundred years, it reappeared in the Collection of Spanish-American Documents of Hans Peter Kraus, who in 1969 donated his collection to the Library of Congress in Washington, where the Chronicle is classified as a Kraus 117 manuscript. | ||
