Summary: | Justice Wilson is depicted holding the second volume (2 Dallas) of the U.S. Reports. This volume contains his most famous opinion, the one in Chisholm v. Georgia, 2 U.S. 419 (1793). Justice Wilson is depicted wearing a red robe because his biographer reports he was "resplendent in the scarlet gown of St. Andrews" when he received an honorary degree from the College of Philadelphia in 1766. The base of the figurine is shaped roughly like the state of Pennsylvania, representing the fact that Justice Wilson was the first member of the U.S. Supreme Court appointed from that state. In 1790, he became the first professional Justice, delivering a lecture on law in the College of Philadelphia's "Old Academy" building. That building, along with some of the text from that lecture, are depicted on the figurine's box. |
