Description
Item Description:Printers' names from Wing CD-ROM.
Contains both Part 1 of the "Resuscitatio" first published in 1657, and Part 2, published separately in 1670.
Numerous errors in pagination; text is contininous despite pagination ([14], 17, 130, 133-185, 190-192, 187-255, [1], [2], 16, 19-22, 21-99, [3]; [16], 8, [2], 16, [2], 19-26, [2], 27-62, [4], 58, [10], 92, [12], 26 pages, [2] leaves of plates)
Part 2 has separate title page: "The second part of the Resusciatatio, or, A collection of several pieces of the works of ... Francis Bacon ... London, Printed by S.G. & B.G. for William Lee ... 1670" and begins separate pagination and register.
Several of the sections have separate title pages, including: "The life of the Right Honourable Francis Bacon" by William Rawley (Pt. 1, pages 1-17, 2nd sequence); "A briefe discourse touching the office of Lord Chancellor of England" by John Selden (Pt. 2, pages 1-7, 16th sequence); and "A true catalogue of the lord chancellors" by William Dugdale (Pt. 2, pages 9-26, 16th sequence)
There were at least 3 booksellers by the name of William Lee active in London in the 17th century, including the one who worked at the Turk's Head address; they can usually be distinguished from yet another William "Lee" or Ley, active 1638-1657, by his preference for the spelling "Ley."
With 2 leaves of engraved plates including an unsigned frontispiece portrait of Bacon; the remaining plate, also of Bacon, follows "The Life" and is signed: "W. Hollar fecit. 1670."
Includes index: pt. 2, pages [1]-[12], 15th sequence.
