Description
Summary:This institutional study examined multiple facets of the Wytheville Community College (Virginia) Dual Credit English program and outlines both the strengths and weaknesses of the initiative. The author provides historical data on the rationale for the program and presents perspectives from various constituencies. The study found that both the Community College and high schools are committed to providing dual credit English classes that are of comparable quality to the College's regular freshmen composition courses. Generally, students and graduates reported a high rate of satisfaction with the program. Students saved both time and money by accumulating college credits while still enrolled in high school. Articulation agreements guaranteed the transferability of dual credit English courses to most state-supported colleges and universities. This report also discusses relevant administration issues such as curriculum development, placement policies and procedures, faculty selection, and program evaluation. The final chapter summarizes program successes, identifies concerns (e.g., student and parental understanding of dual credit, academic advising issues, textbook selection and usage), and makes recommendations for improvements in the dual credit English program. Appended are course outlines, interview questions, and the student survey and results. (Contains 26 references.) (RC)
