Their parents, who are also the authors, actively worked to raise them bilingual. The girls were enrolled in a school French immersion program throughout the study. Their brother had only one semester of French immersion. The study used weekly tape recorded conversations of family dinnertime conversations both in the children's Louisiana home and at their summer residence in French-speaking Quebec. The researchers listened to each recorded conversation and tabulated the number of distinct, individual French and English words (spoken both by the children and their parents). Data analysis indicated that the children's home language preference in Louisiana shifted from predominantly French to overwhelmingly English as they moved from pre-adolescence into early adolescence. However, throughout the 5 years, during summers immersed in French-speaking Quebec, the children's language preference shifted from English to French within weeks. The researchers conclude that the children's preference for English in Louisiana related to the increasing influence of the external, American peer environments. Parental linguistic influence on the children waned over the 5 years. (Contains 13 references.) (SM)
