| Summary: | A research-based administrative training program prepares principals and mentor teachers to evaluate classroom instruction. Since 1986, nearly 300 principals and teachers have participated in the Techniques of Responsive Intervention to Validate Effective Teaching program (TRIVET), which has been offered as a graduate course and year-long workshop. As a staff development program, TRIVET uses principal/teacher collaboration to diagnose instructional programs and prescribe reforms. As part of the larger process to assess student performance levels, the program focuses on the following correlates from effective schools research: the principal's instructional leadership; quality of classroom teaching; and teacher expectations for student success. The program's four processes of data collection are obtained from the effective schools literature: the preobservation conference; "scripting," or data gathering during classroom observation; the postobservation conference; and action planning. The criteria for effective instruction are derived from the teacher effectiveness research and include planning; behavior management; organization of time, space, and materials; learning climate; student assessment; instructional methods; and oral and written communication. The overall implication is that by offering suggestions for improved classroom instruction, the principal can facilitate improved teacher effectiveness, thereby enhancing student achievement levels.
