Summary: | A descriptive study investigated the nature of classroom management practices and teacher thinking about these practices in five kindergartens during the first month of school. Participants (two novice second-year teachers and three experienced teachers) were videotaped during four half-day sessions, beginning with the first day of school and once a week thereafter. Stimulated recall data were gathered in audiotaped interviews as teachers viewed videotapes of themselves. Clinical observations were gathered during and after tapings and interviews. Using these three data sources, a grounded theory analysis generated 55 categories of classroom management issues. Temporal patterns were analyzed. Using the constant comparative technique, eight hypotheses were developed concerning the importance of management over content, routinization, establishment of rules and control, individual behavior problems, discipline styles, first-day differences, and learning opportunities offered by the half-day schedule. Descriptions of similarities and differences between experienced and inexperienced teacher illustrate how they help children learn school behaviors and maintain order the first days of kindergarten.
