This project, designed to promote optimal development of disadvantaged children's basic learning skills relevant to subsequent successful school experiences, provides kindergarten teachers with supplementary instructional materials, differentiated inservice training, aides to provide reinforcement for "targeted" children, and support staff. The program emphasizes the improvement of cognitive functioning, especially in language acquisition, and active involvement on the part of parents. During the 1982-83 school year, project activities focused on the attainment of six specific objectives. The first objective, dealing with children's improvement on the Pre-reading Skills Composite Score on the Metropolitan Readiness Tests, was attained. Of the 264 students (in the total sample of 616) who scored below average on the fall pretest, 220 (83.3 percent) scored average or above average on the spring posttest. The other five objectives, pertaining to ongoing processes concerned with instruction, staff development, and parent-family involvement, were also attained. (CMG)
