520 |a Drawing from a review of the literature on issues related to student retention and attrition, and research on student attitudes toward the Community College of Denver (CCD), this report suggests four models for student retention programs for different two-year college student groups. Following introductory material on the project, a literature review is presented, covering areas such as factors influencing retention/attrition and ways in which the academic and social climate of an institution can facilitate retention. The next section reports on the methodology and findings of the CCD study, which involved a follow-up of students entering the college in 1983 to determine their attitudes toward their experiences at CCD and factors that may have influenced retention. Finally, the four retention models are presented, focusing on: (1) students with undeclared majors/unclear goals; (2) students who are academically underprepared for college; (3) students entering college for the first time; and (4) returning adult students. The models delineate objectives, activities, staffing needs, scheduling issues, matters related to instructional materials, and implementation considerations. (RO)
