Summary: | This paper considers the problems of multiculturalism and teacher education with specific reference to the situation in Wisconsin. The first section deals with the historical interest in multicultural education in America and what the concept means. The second section describes the Human Relations Code in Wisconsin which requires preparation in this area for preservice teachers, and outlines its precepts. The next section presents the findings of a survey of the 30 teacher training institutions in Wisconsin in which respondents were asked to describe the way in which multicultural education components were made available in their curricula and to what extent they were considered important. Multicultural fieldwork and comparative education were ranked high in importance by respondents but were found to be underrepresented in the curricula of the teacher training institutions. It was further found that commitments to providing multicultural education experiences were not met. It is concluded that little is being done in teacher education programs in Wisconsin to address ethnocentric attitudes or to prepare teachers for work in the multicultural classroom. (CG) |
