Summary: | The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of presently employed documents professionals at ARL (Association of Research Libraries) libraries. A survey covering educational background; continuing education activities; organizational affiliations; documents experience; staffing; type of arrangement of the documents collection; total professional experience; and method by which the present position was conducted. A questionnaire was administered through the mail to a random selection of ARL documents librarians. Findings of the study indicate that the highest percentage of the professionals are employed in documents collections which are classed separately, yet located near the remaining collection; they work with one other professional on a full-time basis and two others on a part time basis; their academic background is in the social sciences subject area with a graduate degree in library science; the average amount of professional experience is 12 years in the document field and 16 years in general; and the majority of the professionals surveyed had prior experience in reference service, are active in continuing education activities, and on average regularly read at least two professional journals. A copy of the questionnaire is appended. (Contains 8 references.) (Author/JLB) |
