The treatment was a semantic network-based hypermedia-assisted language-learning environment to help non-native speakers of English learn vocabulary. Field dependence and independence were determined using the Group Embedded Figures Test. Patterns of learning while using the hypermedia were studied. FI and FD students employed different learning strategies. The FD students spent more time using the courseware and used it more often than did the FI subjects. The video format was a favorable medium for the FD participants, although not much difference was found in accessing the textual and graphic media among FD and FI participants. FD learners were more likely to use features that represented the wholeness of the content, while FI users tended to use component features. Hypermedia offers promise in finding ways to match instruction-type to learning style. Five tables and two figures present study findings. (Contains 27 references.) (SLD)
