Summary: | This document describes a practicum on the improvement of teacher ability to cope effectively with disruptive behavior and ultimately to reduce incidence of such behavior. Plans for accomplishing these objectives involved: (1) familiarizing participants with current concepts, techniques, and strategies for dealing with disruptive behavior and (2) assisting them in applying these techniques in individual classrooms. Eleven teachers in an urban school were selected to participate in a program of: (1) inservice seminars; (2) work sessions, with guidance counselors, occupational specialists, and other resource persons to identify ways each of these people could assist the teacher in working with disruptive students; and (3) practical application of techniques learned. Analysis of a post-test on teacher knowledge revealed that scores were, on the average, 75 percent higher than pre-test scores; target group members each realized a 65 percent (or higher) reduction in individual rates of disciplinary referrals to the office; and each participant enjoyed a net reduction of at least 60 percent in his previous rate of classroom disruptions.
