520 |a It is contended that verbal and nonverbal behavior are necessary components of human communication and that they should be conceived of as inseparable elements when teaching a foreign language. It is suggested that the use of gestural dictionaries currently available could serve to close the gap between old and new methods of teaching during the present transition period and until adequate communication oriented textbooks have been prepared. Findings on nonverbal communication based upon research of Canadian children whose home languages were French and English are presented. Verbal and nonverbal behavior are correlated on the level of meaning and on the level of physiology. Implications for the language teacher include the fact that training students in kinesics should facilitate the training in phonetics and in sentence intonation. Extended research is needed on second kinesics acquisition before the teaching of foreign gesticulation can begin. An illustration, two charts, and a bibliography are included. (SW)
