Description
Summary:Research into the definition and the priority structuring of eight values-oriented elements reveals a variety of differences associated with teacher (and preservice teacher) age, sex, and professional level. A study of 246 graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee education department established significant patterns for the values of affection, enlightenment, power, rectitude, respect, skill, wealth, and well-being. Subjects identify each of these values as either a specific objective of education (purpose) or as an incidental effect of the educative system (function), and ranked the values in terms of perceived importance. Resultant data, compiled in the form of statistical and percentile charts, illustrated the role that the teacher cannot help but play in the transmission and formation of cultural, personal, and social values.
