Description
Summary:This report reviews the current debate in industrialized market economy countries on the impact of microelectronics technology on employment. A special focus is on the impact on women's employment opportunities. Chapter 1 presents information on the technological background, including the development of microelectronics and their application in the service sector. Chapter 2 reviews three views in the debate on microelectronics and employment: optimistic, pessimistic, and moderate. In chapter 3 the possible impact of microelectronics on various industries and occupations is discussed. Some quantitative estimates are given. Chapters 4 and 5 concern the impact on women's employment opportunities and working conditions. Issues include the disproportionate effect on the female labor market, possibilities opened by technological change, positive effect on work environments, fragmentation of work, and reduction of skill requirements. Chapter 6 suggests these courses of action: (1) women's participation in public debate and decision making, (2) women's participation in trade union debate and decision making, and (3) compensatory educational and labor market policy measures.
