| Summary: | A program to teach basic social skills to institutionalized severely retarded adults began with identification of those social behaviors that were most desirable and realistic. Following development of the Basic Social Skills Inventory, specific training suggestions were developed for each step of the scale. The program was field tested with two experimental and one control group of residents 16 to 50 years old. The inventory was found to be reliable and the program was found to produce significantly more new socialization skills than the control program. A highly motivated university student worked from a training manual but did not need an orientation or workshop to conduct the program. His comments describing his group and the progress they made in social skills concludes the paper. (CL) |
