520 | |a A study examined the views of leading Northwest business executives concerning the implications of and need for technological literacy in the 1990s and beyond. The executives made it clear that the United States is moving toward a future in which high-technology industries will alter work functions dramatically. Providing students with a basic core curriculum emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach appeared to be the most appropriate and feasible way of meeting the future demands of employers and of developing the adaptability necessary to cope in a rapidly changing technological environment. Interviews with employers in the three leading industries of the Northwest--wood/forest products, health/hospital services, and high technology--consistently revealed that orientation to keyboard and other computer skills will continue to be important for future workers. Cited just as frequently, however, were critical thinking, problem-solving, analyzing, and decision-making skills. It was stressed that schools must seriously address the relationship between liberal arts and technological literacy; continue to seek and upgrade qualified personnel in math, science, and vocational education; and increase state-of-the-art resources and equipment for academic and vocational courses alike. (Appendixes include a list of basic skills and competencies for productive employment and data summaries of the employer interviews dealing with the three aforementioned industries.) (MN) | ||
