It was prepared as part of a series of books to be used in connection with a course of advanced study for experienced philologists and teachers. The Introduction and Part One are based mainly on the 1971-1972 course of lectures on Meaning Equivalence by Akhmanova, and discuss the notion that sentences are to be interpreted semantically through "deep structures" which are realized by their superficial "semantic equivalents." Part One is entitled "Meaning Equivalence on Utterance Level" and is divided into three chapters: "Meaning as a Linguistic Category"; "Purport, Interpretability, Meaning, and Definitions"; and "The Word as a Dialectical Unity of Content and Expression." Part Two, "Meaning Equivalence on the Level of Words," contains the findings of Marcenko's research in the field of synonymy, and is divided into the following chapters: "The Meaning Equivalence of Words as a Fact of Language"; "The Functional Approach to Meaning Equivalence"; and "Meaning Equivalence and Lexicography."
