| Summary: | The process of assimilating continuing education into a university academic department was studied. A systematic theoretical framework was constructed to guide the study. It was proposed that the perceptions of department chairmen are one of the driving and/or restraining factors related to the degree of departmental participation in continuing education. Data supported the existence of differences in perceptions by chairmen of high participating and those of low participating departments in the University of Missouri system on certain select differential continuing education factors (internal and external relations, instructional staff, administration and organization, curriculum, financial policy, research activities, role of the university).
