Summary: | The document traces the activities of the five-week summer institute which provided training for 96 teachers, primarily of migrant and disadvantaged adults in Adult Basic Education. The program activities emphasized: (1) Reading instruction for disadvantaged adults; (2) English as a second language; (3) Motivation and retention of adult learners; (4) Curriculum development; and (5) An IOTA (Instrument for the Observation of Teaching Activities) workshop on evaluation of teaching effectiveness. Personnel qualifications and organizational procedures are described and the content and activities of the IOTA workshop sessions outlined. Participant characteristics and results of a participant questionnaire evaluating the institute activities make up a large part of the document. Eleven key questions with the tabulated responses are presented. A 40 page appendix includes samples of correspondence and the following institute data: (1) A reaction inventory form; (2) Participants weekly log sheets; (3) Consultants evaluation sheet; and (4) On-site followup discussion.
