Abstract: | The objective of this investigation is to develop and assess the skill of a three-dimensional, prognostic numerical model of the Gulf of Mexico and to identify the thermal impact of operating OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) power plants on the physical environment. The investigation consists of the following technical elements: adaptation and refinement of an existing multi-layer numerical model to the Gulf of Mexico basin, including realistic boundary conditions and bottom topography, to predict the time dependent circulation and temperature distribution in the Gulf throughout the year; comparison of the model predictions with the observed features of the Gulf; and application of the model to the case of OTEC power plants in the Gulf to estimate the physical perturbations to the environment. |
