520 3 |a Parotid fluid was collected under conditions of very minimal stimulation from 3,868 systemically healthy young adult males over a period of two calendar years. The study was carried out in a subtropical climate in which the only thermal discomfort resulted from the summer heat.
520 3 |a Parotid flow rate was at a high level during the winter months, at a significantly lower level during the summer, and at intermediate levels during spring and fall.
520 3 |a During the summer months the mean rate of parotid flow was 0.031 ml/minute; during the winter flow rate mean increased by 35% to 0.042 ml/minute. A systemic state of relative dehydration was held responsible for the decrease in gland function found during the summer months.
