Col. Payne's answer to governor [electronic resource].

March 5, 1847 reply by Col. Brevet M.M. Payne to Virginia's resolution to present Payne with a sword for services rendered in the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. Of note, his brevet rank was an honorary promotion in recognition of gallant conduct, similar to medals currently used.
